As one of the greatest English literature classics, first published in 1678, The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan has an engaging, adventurous attractiveness about it that appeals to a wide range of readers. Employing great skill with his allegorical style, the Bedford Tinker communicates the truth of Scripture with such an enticing, even at times a droll manner. Yet the seventeenth century text may not be so appealing to the modern mind. For this reason, Dr. Barry Horner's Accurate Revised Text, incorporating 36 chapters and an easy-to-read layout, by which he recovers the appeal that Bunyan originally intended for the common man. The text has been somewhat smoothed out while nevertheless retaining uncompromising accuracy. Some quaint expressions have been retained while more modern equivalent terms are provided. Bunyan's Scripture references are included as chapter end-notes. Many other references and textual clarifications are added in italics.
Dr. Horner is regarded as an authority on this, Bunyan's magnum opus. His doctoral studies have led to additional helpful reference works including, The Pilgrim's Progress - Themes and Issues, 512 pages, a more theological analysis, and A Comprehensive Outlined Commentary on The Pilgrim’s Progress, 655 pages.
