'Single To Morden' is the tale of hapless 20-something Tim Howden, whose girlfriend, Sarah, has absconded to London without leaving a forwarding address. All he knows is that she's living "somewhere near the Northern Line" - and so, assisted by best friend Jeremy, Tim vows to spend a day at each Northern Line tube station until he finds her. About Spike Evans

Spike Evans was brought up in Yorkshire. He is married and lives with his wife, Jo, and their cat, Fred, in a tiny terraced house crammed with ancient (largely non-functioning) musical instruments. 'Single To Morden' is his first novel; its not-quite follow-ups, 'Cheek' and 'Apeman' are available on... well, you know, a certain well-known book retailing site. The evil one. Ahem.

This is a very well written and consistently funny comic novel. I agree with the blurb that it has a "Nick Hornby-ish flavour" - in fact, I would go further and say that comparisons with Nick Hornby are entirely justified here.

For a slightly longer review, including a discussion of the role of the London Underground network as a topological paradigm in urban meta-fictional psycho-geography (sorry, I don't know what happened there, I must have momentarily turned into Will Self - mercifully it didn't last long), see:

This is a funny novel and so easy to read, but it makes you think about life and yourself if you let it. As a small town girl who tackled London on my own I identified with Tim's highs and lows. It is one of those can't stop reading but don't want it to end books.
