The novel Peggy the Lifeguard tells of a promiscuous and overweight lifeguard that loves to drink and meet men. At age twenty-six, Peggy is still scanning the beaches while her unmet goals linger in the back of her head. With a sense of unhappiness, Peggy can only continue to do what she is used to.
With more slip-ups at work, and having to tolerate her plastic surgery hungry mother and drunken friend Kate, Peggy tries to explore what she needs to do with her life. But after discovering that she is pregnant, Peggy ends up crashing her car, which sends her into a coma.
Seven years later, Peggy wakes up to discover that she successfully gave birth while in a coma. During that time, her vanity obsessed mother has been controlling everything in her daughter’s life. What she is being taught is going against Peggy’s values, especially when she finds out her daughter is participating in a little miss beauty pageant.Without the ability to walk, Peggy finds what was missing from her past and does whatever she can to stop her mother’s control of her daughter.
