A SPLICER -- BUT A PARAGON OR A PARIAH?
CHAOS IN THE HORIZON
Years of failure have finally culminated in a bitter success as Sophie Audler splices energy with another person for the first time, allowing her to generate an emerald aura around her body that she can burst to make a concussive explosion all around her. The problem, however, is that the person she was able to bond with in order to generate this energy, Toole, is a member of the most cutthroat group of bandits the splicers have ever encountered...
Now with this thief as her hostage, she must harbor him as a secret fugitive so he can’t leave her custody until he has answered the questions that plague her. How could an outsider learn the arcane secrets of splicing auras? Are there other renegade splicers in the wilderness? And, most importantly, why does her aura power show that she connects more easily with a vicious criminal than with her own partner, Logan, who is also on this mission to escort the Dioledians back to their village?
As they approach the village where she and Logan are sent to spread the word and influence of splicers, she must find a way to make the bandit appear like a harmless visitor while also protecting an entire population from his murderous potential.

Toole had lowered his hands and stared at Sophie.
“What?” she asked.
He laughed. “Bet you didn’t think he was as, well…” Toole pursed his lips as if trying to work the words out of his mouth like a bit of dirt, “as unscrupulous as a bandit, now did you?”
“Did you just learn that word?” Sophie asked.
“I’m smarter than you think.”
“Smart enough to stay in my custody.”
“What can I say? The leash you’ve fit for me isn’t as bad as the one they’d like to see me wear.” Toole pointed to the gallows near the center of the village. “That’s the third sign that they’ll be a successful city soon enough.”
Sophie removed the leather straps from her pocket and gently seized his forearms. She tied Toole’s wrists while he tried to make small talk with each passing villager, only to be ignored or scowled at for his forward remarks at the ladies. One middle-aged woman caught sight of his bindings and bit her lip as she approached the inn.
“I picked the right place to get jailed,” Toole said, bowing at the woman without taking his eyes from hers.
