Benny Rugless discovers that he is a Tendinum, on his fifteenth birthday. His birthday marks fourteen years since his mother had been murdered by Corvilen. His father, and uncle Lungin, take him to his new school Triumphet. At Triumphet Benny not only discovers his own power, but encounters his best friends, Wilfred and Iris (Iris’s family owned the school before her parents were killed by Corvilen.) Benny and Iris decide that they must reavenge their parents by finding and stopping Corvilen, Wilfred agrees to be present at whatever journey they may come across.
The trio determines that Professor Florence is spying for Corvilen, and that she and Calvin (student) have been working together. In the mean time Benny is finding that his specific is more powerful than any he’s seen yet, and that he and Corvilen have more in common then he may be willing to admit. Benny finds Wilfred interested in other things; his family friend named Piper.
During open house, Dimorten (Professor) gives Iris the ownership of her childhood home that her parents left for her in their will. Meanwhile Lungin takes Benny to a secret room and gives him the Duraduses jewel, which Florence had been attempting to intercept for him.
Iris tells Benny and Wilfred of her house, and that she must go back. They (Benny and Wilfred) accompany her, along their way they are met by Corvilen. It is there that Corvilen reveals that he is his uncle, and Benny begins to question every word his father had ever told him. They escape Corvilen, but he has left a surprise in store for them, and leaving them unharmed had been intentional. At Iris’s house they find a wreck and the symbol of the Nemtis lining the rooms, as well as their helpers, the rane; but it had not been the work of the creatures, it had been the work of Corvilen. Benny finds himself using dark magic but concludes it is just another specific power that he had acquired (Tendinums cannot use dark magic).
Iris finds the blade her father had hid (Armastio), and they return to school the following morning. They come across a dead Nemtis that Benny’s uncle had left for them to see, and a few feet away a wolf pup. They name her Odolf and raise her, discovering that she is a modified wolf, one used by Tendinums.
Benny summons Lungin (using the Duraduses jewel), who explains to them that Armastio is one of two brother blades, and that Corvilen is now on the hunt for the second; Dimastio.
As things beyond the walls of Triumphet progress Benny begins to feel trapped and useless. They (Benny, Iris and Wilfred) ready their things to leave- for good. Benny returns to the room Lungin had shown him one last time and finds a blade that seemed crafted for him, with a stranger symbol that Iris had shown him earlier (Triangle with a horizontal line through it).
Benny summons Lungin, who agrees to take them with him to find Corvilen. Along the way Benny learns that his real father is Lungin. Benny, with the help of his friends sends Lungin away and proceeds to find Luther Rocswith (who knows all there is to know about blades and specific powers). Rocswith tells them that the brother blade is located in a temple called Exiliera, but that he must come along with them.
A phone call tells them that they are on the right track; Corvilen had taken Piper hostage and would kill her if they did not go to the temple. On arrival things don’t go as planned; Iris, Wilfred and Rocswith are kidnapped and Benny deals with the weight of having become a murderer himself. Lungin (who knew he was in danger due to the Duraduses jewel) arrives capable Tendinums, as wells as Pipers parents to help Benny stop Corvilen for taking the brother blade; but they are too late.
After, many battles within the temple, Benny sees only one solution. He reaches Corvilens side and is taken to his labyrinth.
