Horror of a Dark Heart: People Are Hostile Beneath the Thin Veneer of Civilization--Why People Are so Often Selfish, Deceptive, Manipulative, Unethical, Destructive, Violent, Sadistic, and Sinful
Hostility is an innate, independent, instinctual disposition in people and a powerful obstacle to a civilized society. Fully annotated and cited, this interdisciplinary study recounts many terrible past and present hostile human actions, many somewhat below the radar of well-known events. The subject matter is fully brought to life by presenting the dark, more “secret” nature of human behavior. More
Far too many of us are unhappy today because of the routine immorality, nastiness, unfairness, deceit, duplicitousness, manipulation, carelessness, greed, racism, hostility, and even physical violence coming from so many of the people all around us. We can be left injured in their wake. Unfortunately, people fall into wrongdoing to one degree or another far too readily.
While almost all of us have some capacity for decency and kindness to a lesser or greater degree, all people are capable of meanness and wrongdoing. With a great degree of variation, we are all victims—and victimizers—some of the time. The bulk of human history is highlighted by recurrent mayhem, persecution, cruelty, greed, violence, war, and even genocide. Many people who undertake physical violence against others are grossly angry, depressed, and/or have other mental illnesses. Furthermore, the small routine hostilities so common in everyday life, like lying and ridicule, may be symbolic, self-constrained gestures of much deeper aggression.
People’s universal wrongful conduct is addressed, particularly the following:
• lying to manipulate
• interpersonal workplace hostility
• sadism and cruelty
• genocide, and mass extermination
In the final analysis, hostility is an innate, independent, instinctual disposition in people and a powerful obstacle to a civilized society. The capacity to do evil deeds is within us from birth, a manifestation starting with our early ancestry; in fact, we emerged from the most highly aggressive and intelligent primate the earth has ever known, the "killer ape." In essence, part of human nature is that most people are at least somewhat evil.
Through broadly researched sources, historic and new, information is presented and synthesized from the fields of history, law, religion, anthropology, psychology, literature, and more about people’s universal, multitudinous wrongful conduct. Fully annotated and cited, this interdisciplinary study recounts many terrible past and present hostile human actions, many somewhat below the radar of well-known events. The subject matter is fully brought to life by presenting the dark, more “secret” nature of human behavior behind the scenes of dreadful, tragic actions and events. A central focus is on powerful people behind atrocious acts: the high-level inspirers and planners. Furthermore, this study explains the reasons why so many people are so often selfish, deceptive, manipulative, unethical, dishonest, destructive, violent, and more.
While there are differences of opinion on the matters described in this study, the facts and theories presented here strongly indicate that people are clearly disposed to routine over-aggression through various types and degrees of selfish, destructive, hostile, and violent thoughts and behaviors.
