This is a great first novel from a new author who has reinvented some familiar stories and given them a new twist. It's dark, exciting and quite sexy, with a thread of dark humour running all the way through. I particularly liked the way the story in the present day mirrored events in the past and the clever way the plot and characters develop and they react in logical ways that seem believable. I certainly didn't see some of the twists coming and when you think it's over, you find it's only just begun. There were times, when I had to keep reading even though it was late, but I wanted to reach the end of a section. This isn't your conventional love story, but it is a romance in a strange way. And the ending sets up the second book perfectly.
I saw that the second in the series The Germani is out soon, and I'll be interested to see what happens next and where the story develops in both modern day Rome and Hadrian's time. I definitely recommend this book. As it's historically quite accurate , it a good way to learn about the past whilst reading an entertaining ad enthralling story.
