Children's spirituality is a relatively new field. Child dedvelopment curriculums focus heavily on developmental areas of social, emotional, fine motor, gross motor, speech, language and cognitive skills. Religious education programs focus on the religious philosphies of the particular religion.
Children's spirituality's focus is on the child's experience of God. It goes beyond the mental health curriculums of early childhoos and also goes beyond biblical teachings of religious programs. Instead it focuses on what the child feels, his innate connection to God and the gifts and talents the child was born with to use in the world.
When parents have the broader view of children's spirituality they have the ammunition to understand the world from the child's point of view. We often feel we are to fill the child with our knowledge. While there is great truth to this there is also truth in children sharing their knowledge with us.
Since children have just left God they have a more recent experience with the sacred than we do. If we learn how to listen to the voice of God through our children we will find ourselves becoming more childlike.
