These sixteen short stories work together as a terrific whole, providing a surrealistic mood with vague backgrounds (that these pieces take place in Scotland only adds to the mystique) and strange motivations. Its humor, however, is focused, and the interactions between the characters in all the stories have precision and depth. They do not, however, all sound the same. Neither do they sound like the author. Wonderful stories, then, if a bit otherworldly—but what’s wrong with that?
