Based in a leafy suburb of London, I took time out from my career in marketing and advertising to write my first fictional novel. The idea for the book had been with me for over a year, but the will or need to write a novel had followed me like an unfulfilled shadow since school days.
Well the shadow has not gone, it just wants to grow bigger. Hungry like a dark character from Dr Who.
The writing process was cathartic and fun. Being allowed to hole up in a public library and do what you like for two days a week should not be sniffed at. The book took around 13 weeks to write and then that again to self edit, self publish and proofread.
Now, without the aid of a publisher, came the hard part - getting the book out there and out from my shadow to be its own entity.
2020 Vision is very current, it plays to the political and apocalyptic zeitgeist, as well as ecological and nuclear fears. Growing up reading post Cold War fiction, it was this idea of the 'End of Times' being the ultimate ending to a book that inspired the start of my own novel.
People love to watch a journey, be it X-Factor or some other TV show, so to follow the main protagonist on her journey of discovery through the medium of her personal diary intrigued me. It's not easy for a man to write as a woman and that's not to say I have it exactly right, as even writing as a man can be difficult across differing cultures and age gaps. Yet the ability to get into her head, feel her aspirations and pain and express them was at times, easier than I'd hoped.
Well, I'm back to spend time with my family now and enjoy living in this Glorified Triangle, before someone presses the big red button and we all go BOOM!
