Reviews of Bleak - The First Mission by Ian Martyn

Fionna Guillaume reviewed on April 24, 2016

Ian Martyn packs an incredible amount of detail into this short story. We meet Bleak, a shapeshifter guided by his Prime Directive: to follow orders, whatever the cost. With the war successfully concluded, however, Bleak finds himself in the situation of being expendable. An excellent introduction to what promises to be a grand futuristic adventure for Bleak.

An utterly absorbing easy read. Bleak is an enigmatic but utterly human character utterly oppressed a mind programmed to carry out is brutal missions in the midst of a bitter war. I can't wait to find whether Bleak can exceed his programming and find a way to survive.
