Ratrum watched as his pet wolf flinched a few times, and then sagged to the floor.
Ratrum looked up at Regen, his nostril flaring.
The two met like bullets in the middle of the tunnel, slamming into each other with the force of a hurricane. They stumbled backward, nauseated, only to look up and charge again. This time, however, Regen drew his sword. He ran fast, and Ratrum couldn’t stop himself in time.
With both Ratrum and his wolf in a heap behind him, Regen moved toward his son’s pale body. He carefully inspected Equalem’s chest and nose.
“I’m so sorry!” Regen muttered through tear-filled eyes. “I’m sorry for this, I’m sorry for never being there, I’m sorry about your Mom, I’m sorry about never saying anything, I’m sorry about the expectations that weighed down on you. I’m sorry for a lot of things.” Regen lifted his head, a newfound determination radiating from within him. “But I will not be sorry about this. Equalem the Yellow, I will not let you die!”
Near the end of his sentence, Regen lifted a fist high in the air, bringing it down with a snap on Equalem’s chest. On Regen’s travels he learned that the proper way to resuscitate people is to break a few ribs. As bad and painful as that sounded, Regen accepted what had to be done, and allowing one last tear to stream from his eye, Regen began pounding on Equalem’s chest. Muttering to himself the word “please” over and over again.
Regen sat pounding on his son’s chest for several minutes, but to no avail. Finally, the blue-cowled hunter sat back and shook his head. Equalem was dead.
Lyrical Luke, Bromet the Brown, Tather, Prince Charming. Never heard of them? They reside under varying titles. Bard, Bounty Hunter, Kingdom, and Hero. Except, in these Seven Kingdoms there aren't any heroes. The Story Books have been wiped clean. Knights don't rescue Princesses from towers. Princes don't kiss their true love awake. Heroes don't defeat the Villains. Good will always rise up to face evil. And so, Heroes must arise from places one would never imagine a hero to come from. These heroes don't wear armor or robes, but they're willing to risk their lives to save their country. Between Witches, Tyrants, and Assassins, it doesn't look well for Heroism. Besides, nobody ever said the Heroes won...or live.
