The Day Harken Darringer Died

Rated 5.00/5 based on 1 reviews
Not since “City of Night” was released in 1963 has there been a more unsanitized brutally honest semi-autobiographical novel.

This eye-opening novel chronicles a talented and beguiling young man's escape from his lesbian mother to California where he began a dark but often slapstick life in the underground of pornography and sex-work. More

About DoctorBuckles

DoctorBuckles is pink card carrying gay overachiever who wears his heart on his sleeve. Amassing educational degrees is his particular compulsion. He has no less than four degrees – a Bachelors in Art, with special emphasis on life drawing, a Doctor of Education in Counseling Psychology, a Masters in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, and a Masters in Art Therapy. He also trained at the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry Drug and Alcohol Clinic while launching his career as an advocate and social therapist for gang-affiliated mothers and at-risk youth as well as homeless populations and people with AIDS/HIV. Currently he is a Chemical Dependency Recovery Specialist working with licensed professional populations.

As if overachieving in academics wasn’t enough he has always been an active visual artist and arts advocate, he had a first life in sex work, then a career in pornography doing advertising/marketing, publication design, as well as mainstream corporate direct mail advertising. He recently became active in collaborative environmental and experimental art using a variety of new media (trans media). He has volunteered in many capacities at art institutions and nonprofit organizations including for Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Social Services (GLASS), Outfest (LGBT Film Festival), Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), City of West Hollywood Arts Commission, and Chris Brownlie Hospice.

DoctorBuckles is an adventurer with an avid fascination for human proclivities. One proclivity brought him his name: DoctorBuckles. He laughs when asked what it means because it blurs the boundary between his former sex-work profession, his current professional life, and that of being a gay artist. He says, “It keeps people guessing.” He lives in the hub of Boystown in West Hollywood, California and is active in the gay community.

I'm not a big fan of gay porn fiction, or porn; I have better things to do. However, this book was referred to me by a friend, and I was told it was "autobiographical." Knowing a bit about the author, I bought a copy, and found it odd that the protagonist would be dying in the first chapter. Oh, if that were the ONLY twist in this tome, I might have been bored! What ensued was the character development of Harken Derringer, son of a closeted gay preacher and a frustrated Lesbian would-be concert pianist. That hooked me but good. I'm not going to issue any spoilers here, but a lot of what came later in Harken's life once upon arriving in Los Angeles riveted me to the book until its end, since I was in that same gay community when all this was happening. The unabashed frankness and detail of the debauchery isn't, it's all too real, since I was there and knew the scene well enough. This isn't just porn...this is people, how their lives end up where they did, and the ramifications of deathly disease and the politics thereof, and the haven of tortured souls, drugs. This book indeed got my attention, and still does. See for yourself...and be prepared. If you're looking just for pulp fapping material, this ain't it...this is a lot more.
