Tobago-born Mervyn O’Neil has opted for a quiet role on behalf of
Tobago and the region. As founder and president of the Slammer
Sports Club he focused on building communities through sport in
Tobago and Trinidad. Recognizing the importance of positive images
abroad, he joined others in the 1970s in the establishment of the
Carivibes Radio Program and Trinidad and Tobago Carnival parade
at Boston, and the Crossover Magazine at Los Angeles.
He notes that bridges between the Caribbean and its Diaspora are
important and as a founding member and president of the Trinidad and
Tobago Medical Relief Committee he has coordinated relief efforts for
the region along with research-based public health clinics on Tobago.
He is the current editor of the Tobago Voice magazine with its focus
on promoting Tobago and reaching out to those who are concerned
about the island. He is a retired Chemical Engineer who has worked
