I didn't know that there were private investigators making a living in England a couple of decades ago, but it makes a great launchpad for this story. The main character is determined to unravel what happened to his grandfather. He faces villainous Americans and unspeakable French policemen, helped by some charming characters and a share of good luck too. After the beginning (which I found a little disorientating) the narrative drives ahead. The nature of the secret chemical weapon, undiscovered since WW2, adds a special kind of danger to the action. I liked it.

I first read Shout in the Dark, and it was very well written. The adventure of Matt Rider in Hands of the Traitor is excellent. It is written so that one becomes obsessed with finding out what the next chapter holds in store. One can also see that there was extensive research made to make this story as good as it is.
I am definitely looking forward to delving into the further adventures of Matt and Zoè.
