K. A. Laity seeks a nimbleness in writing that will keep up with her myriad interests. At present she teaches medieval literature, creative writing, film and New Media in the English Department at the College of Saint Rose in upstate New York. In addition to novels and short stories, she also writes drama, humour, reviews, academic essays and journalism, including a weekly column for BitchBuzz, the global women's lifestyle network.
Magic, myth and folklore infuse her writing. The short story collection Unikirja (Aino Press 2009) grew from the influence of her family's Finnish roots as well as the myths and legends of the Kalevala and Kanteletar. Laity's travels around Iceland, Finland and Britain ground her magical writing in very real places, and her studies in the Middle Ages inform the stories she tells. It has always been her aim to bring interesting if obscure knowledge from the past to a popular audience. Dead languages and dusty manuscripts may not sound exciting, but within them lies a magical world that too few know.
