About Tom Gates

Tom Gates was a “cubical-dwelling, corporate IT wannabe who turned ESL teacher”. He spent 4½ years in Busan, South Korea teaching English through the EPIK program. He shared his experiences, thoughts, and musings through his blog and YouTube channel of the same name, the Red Dragon Diaries.
During his stay in Korea he traveled to Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, and all throughout Korea.
And with great pride he earned a 3rd degree black belt in judo through the Korea Judo Association.

After following Tom Gates on You Tube and Facebook for about three years, I was optimistic when he mentioned writing a book. This is an all inclusive account about what teaching in South Korea was like from his point of view. It definitely answered many questions I had, plus elaborated on a few topics he previously presented in videos. I will use this book as a reference guide in the future and would highly recommend it to those in need of one.

Review by: Nicole Wrage on April 27, 2016 :
This book will enable you to make an informed decision of whether or not to teach English in Korea. It’s also a fascinating read! If you’re contemplating this path, the factors you should take into consideration are all included. It’s all-encompassing, so questions you have will be fully answered, leaving you confident in either direction you take. Tom Gates doesn’t just provide information, but concisely narrates what you need to do and the reasons why. He shares his story in a way that you gain valuable insight without needing to be in his same position to relate; he wrote it as an unbiased resource for you, more expansive than a simple tale of himself. I’d done a lot of research prior to reading this book, but it was only after reading it that I felt enlightened, finally having complete answers to my vital questions. His practical advice eased my fears, particularly related to not yet having formal teaching experience. Save yourself a lot of time, money, and worries…read this book! You’ll either be assured that teaching English in Korea is not the right fit for you, or you’ll be assured it is. If the latter, you’ll be ready to begin the adventure!
