Takes place in 1920 and shows some of the authorial weaknesses of that period. Still worth a read, though.

Remarkably self-assured (and beauteous, of course) American gal heads for England to take over the business she's inherited. Mystery immediately raises its weird head, and with the aid of an old retainer she embarks on a dangerous investigation. Adventure and romance quickly follow, along with a frightful antagonist.
