The Helpful Neighbor

Rated 4.60/5 based on 5 reviews
Ever had to deal with that friend or neighbor who insists on "helping" you with a project? No problem if he's actually competent and knowledgeable, but what if he isn't? It's an awkward predicament, ending anywhere between hurt feelings and extensive property damage. This short story takes a humorous look at this scenario from the skewed perspective of the "Helpful Expert" himself...

About David R. Stookey

For my day job, I'm an engineer at a digital printer manufacturing company in western New York. I'm also a husband, the father of two fantastic girls and a neurotic little dachshund named "Misty."

As an undergraduate, my focus was primarily mathematics and physics. I guess I ultimately needed the "nerdy stuff" for my career, but the class I enjoyed the most was an "Introduction to Writing Fiction." Not only did I learn the basics for my own writing; I got to hear a wide variety of perspectives and techniques from other students.

I still have a great deal to learn, and e-publishing seems like the perfect way to get started.

When I'm not writing, I enjoy flying, skiing and backpacking with my girls. Thanks for taking the time to visit my page, and I hope you enjoy the stories.

I couldn't stop cracking up at this story. The writer does a good job of establishing just how clueless the viewpoint character actually is, even if he is completely right about everything in his own mind. The viewpoint character's sexism and complete lack of concern for the injuries of others made you wish for his comeuppance even more.

I honestly really felt sorry for the neighbors. I couldn't stop laughing at the end of the story especially, with the reference to clay soil being used as a foundation. Seriously, if I lived next door to this guy, I'd be considering a move.

This was hilarious. It's begging to be expanded into a novel or a series.
