This story is a wonderful mashup of fairytale and procedural crime drama. The characters are a quirky bunch; Althea's the kind of kick-ass heroine who doesn't need anyone's help, but isn't the silent/moody/broody type that turns up so often. She's refreshingly decisive about her actions. King Markon is of course not your usual male lead either, being a middle-aged(ish) father who does tend to feel he's not as young as he used to be.
The Fae of this story are suitably amoral, both threatening and serene in their own unknowable way. Don't expect sparkles and pixies in this Faeryland! It's high fantasy with a hint of nasty, but also some humour to keep things light.
It's an enjoyable read for those who need a magical mystery with a dash of the darker side of Faery mythology.
