“I-I’m sorry! But my mommy and daddy told me… they told me that everything dies! And then it goes to heaven! So it’s not so bad. Everyone’s gotta die sometime. We just gotta try to be good people and…” Bobbie rambled, trailing off as her uncle began to quietly laugh. It was a welcome change from the tears he had been shedding, and he pulled his hand away from her, drawing it towards his mouth to smother his chuckles. The sound grew louder, more erratic, until the man was outright guffawing. Bobbie smiled in relief, allowing her injured arm to fall limp at her side and reaching out towards her uncle with her other hand.
“You’re right, baby girl. You’re absolutely right. I’m sorry I yelled at you.” He said as his laughter began to subside. He wiped a tear from his eye. “Everybody’s gotta die sometime.” He murmured, reaching a hand out to brush her tears away. She smiled, glad that her uncle wasn’t mad at her anymore. She still felt bad about that lightning bug, though.
“Do you think lightning bugs go to heaven like people do?” She inquired innocently. He brushed a thumb against her cheek, seeming to consider the question. He slid his hand to the back of her head once more, stroking a hand through her now-matted hair.
“Do you want to find out?”
