“Yes!” The sailor laughed, leaping to the stern of his boat. At the sight of his catch, he froze.
There, writhing with fear and fury, a mermaid’s tail got caught deeper in the net, blue-purple scales flashing. Every so often, she would dive. The net would only let her go so far.
Her scream pierced his ears, and he fell back with a cry, gritting his teeth to keep from biting his tongue. After a second, the mermaid fell silent again.
Squinting through tears, he glanced at the stern of the boat. The water had calmed.
Taking a deep breath, he pulled the anchor up with a whistle. “I’ll tell ya, girl, you really are somethi—”
The boat pitched. The sailor was thrown back in his seat, and then pinned to the side as the tiny vessel got dragged backwards, deeper and deeper, into the middle of the ocean. ...
