A Cardboard Box

The journey of life encompasses many memories. The act of collecting them together as we form our own identity can be perhaps be considered somewhat like gathering our poignant moments in the box of our minds. What's inside your box?

'A Cardboard Box' is a small collection of poetry relating to themes of relationships, identity and coming of age.

About Jessica McKenzie

I've been inspired to write for as long as I can remember, starting off as a child writing squiggles down in my Jurassic Park notebook before I knew how to form letters. I was just responding to an impulse to fill it up with something. Once I learned how to write, I put together short stories that were mostly accompanied by drawings that were veritable nonsense, but I was still enjoying myself.

Obviously as adolescence set in, I discovered poetry and melancholy music. Unfortunately I also discovered self-criticism and shied away from showing anything I'd written. I couldn't imagine myself as ever being a writer. My laptop at the time has since died a dishonourable death because the motherboard tanked, so I have no way of retrieving anything.

During the past ten years, I've found that it's not just about nurturing my interest in writing, but about finding the confidence to present it to an audience and to keep going when inspiration runs dry while self-criticism runs deep. I feel like I've come a long way, but the journey has only just begun!
