This book is not your standard romance, there is more to it than that. We see the two main characters growing up, and that helps us to see how they develop and become the people they are. We also find out a little about how the Spanish treated the Aztecs, and how Eduard and Johanna's relationship develops.
If that sounds a little dry, it is not. It is well written and the story gripped me. Recommended.
