He held himself to a high standard and trusted his own judgment. Some of his actions would not be tolerated today, but the rule those were different times and A.J. did what was needed to achieve justice and maintain of law.
A.J. entered law enforcement at a time when police were seldom under public scrutiny and were accountable only to their departments. He watched it evolve and welcomes the ¬¬¬¬modern concerns, especially for police interactions with minorities. In his own small way, especially in dealing with youthful offenders, he contributed to this evolution.
This book describes only a fraction of Spagnoletti’s remarkable career, but it represents what he thinks is interesting, or illustrates some points and practices he wants to record. The descriptions of his job interviews and his first days on the force display his independence and sense of humor; and the sexually involved cases show his compassion and concern for victims, and his understanding of human weakness. A.J.’s ability to read and influence suspects is forcefully illustrated in his murder cases, and especially in his undercover narcotics work.
Some of his exploits were clearly illegal and dangerously hostile, especially when his family was threatened. They were an important part of his persona, so they are duly recorded.
In many ways, A.J. made his world safer. He enjoyed his work and is convinced his life has made a positive difference. This is obviously correct,
