About David Vernon

I am a freelance writer and editor. I am father of two boys. For the last few years I have focussed my writing interest on chronicling women and men’s experience of childbirth and promoting better support for pregnant women and their partners. Recently, for a change of pace, I am writing two Australian history books. In 2014 I was elected Chair of the ACT Writers Centre.

In 2010 I established the Stringybark Short Story Awards to promote the short story as a literary form.

This text is a great take on Australian history - having a diverse array of writers submit stories inspired by historical events in Australia brings a real richness to events in Australia's past that often gets swept under the rug. A real strength of the authors is their distinct voice that encapsulates different classes, lives and people within their stories. A great read with a variety of perspectives, each story takes you in and leaves you feeling quite satisfied.

Thanks to the God of Writing Short Stories (and David Vernon), you can throw away those boring Australian history texts. Yawn! Instead, read this wonderfully rich anthology - fiction based on fact. It's a clever approach to capturing this old land's chequered recent past. You will learn true details of, and imagined possibilities for, the extraordinary individuals who have helped make Australia what it is in the 21st century. Here, 30 writers have put their hearts and souls into crafting thoughtful well-researched pieces for your enlightenment. These pieces need to be shared with everyone you know, especially now, when life may seem fractured by external forces. There's nothing new under the sun. Join the writers here on their journeys!!
