This book is an easy read and provides accurate information necessary to enjoy China. I met the author in China while I was with one of the volunteering organizations she mentions in the book. My greatest interest was finding out how to get to China without an organization, should we decide to go in the future, (you make substantially (potentially) less money with organizations but, as she notes, it takes the hassle out of it so it is an option we were glad we used) and she answered that question thoroughly and with sufficient clarity that I would be confident in going through the process myself. I also like that it has links and references to other articles and websites that are useful and worthwhile. She doesn't put down any hard and fast numbers of what to expect cost wise, which is why I didn't give it the fifth star. Had she made an archetypical character and itemized their expenses for a good experience in China, packing and travel and legalities included, I think this would be even better. Or if she included these items from her own experience, even, I would have appreciated it. I am very number oriented so would like to see that. (All that being said, archetypical experiences in China are really hard to achieve because personalities are so varied and some enjoy the serene views while some like bustling metropolitan areas, and like the author, many enjoy both! So, in short China is what you make of it, like most things, and I think the author did a great job at conveying that, at the same time giving the information necessary for someone to put down the book and start making plans for China!)
