Petra has always been able to see into the future. Her gift marks her as different from others—“I’m a weirdo,” she sighs--but the real problem is that her visions show her only tragedies. “Wonderful things happen to people every day,” she says mournfully. “But I only see the horrible stuff.”
Once she told her classmates about her visions, but that was a mistake. Now she has no friends; the other kids call her a witch and whisper that she makes bad things happen. So Petra is thrilled when her mom decides that it’s time for the two of them to move to another city. She hopes that she’ll have another chance to make friends. Even better, they’ll be living with Mamie, Petra’s beloved grandmother.
Petra already has a friend in her new community. Jeremy lives next door, and he and Petra played together every summer when she visited her grandmother. She and Jeremy have known each other since they were five, and Petra hopes to pick up where they left off. She tells herself that at least she’ll have one friend.
But Petra soon meets Mimi and Kiley, two of the most popular kids in school, and the three girls hit it off right away. Soon Petra is dating Caleb, a great guy who she’s pretty sure she’ll be with for years. For the first time in her life, she’s has friends who love her. Of course, none of them know the real Petra—the girl who can see the future. And even though she’s popular, life isn’t perfect. For one thing, Jeremy has changed—or maybe Petra is just now seeing who he’s always been. He acts out angrily, and Petra’s friends urge her to pull away from him.
And there’s the vision, too—the most horrific vision Petra has ever seen. Petra is forced to watch as each of her friends is gunned down in cold blood. She can’t see the shooter, and she doesn’t know when or where the terrifying events will occur. But the vision recurs with increasing intensity, and Petra knows she’s running out of time to save her friends.
