Two years after crash-landing on the planet Mega, and surviving against great odds, the colonists from Earth struggle to expand their base.
When paleontologist Benjamin Bota searches for ground water and fecal samples, he stays out too long in a vast, grass-land plain. His makeshift sled breaks down and he must make it back to a tiny sub-station before the planet’s most dangerous animals—the Longuai—appear during their annual outbreak. The mysterious Longuai seem to be a cross between piranhas and locusts, and can kill a human within minutes. But when Bota reaches the sub-station he finds it smashed by large, lumbering scavengers—the hexapods—leaving him stranded and helpless to fight off the expected swarm of Longuai. Knowing that this dangerous enemy has already killed several colonists without warning, Bota chokes back his fear and hatches a plan with only a small chance of success.
