About Texi Smith

I started my love affair with writing at a young age writing fictitious matchday programmes for my beloved Newcastle United. Although never having excelled at English in a school environment, there was one piece of writing in year 7 that my well-respected English teacher Mr Boothroyd singled out as 'masterful', giving me belief and leading to some hi-octane high speed match reports at University for the First XI football team. This culminated in my one and only accolade of Uni Journalist of the Year in 1995. I still have the trophy.

Further match report writing seasons followed in Australia, capturing the essence of youth and senior games, most of which would never have been given any journalistic coverage whatsoever, before a successful two-year stint as newsletter editor for the highly regarded In Off The Post publication for the local football club. Much acclaim for the punchy writing style has sown the seed for a book, and the result of a three-year stop-start writing process is a first novel, Introducing Jarrod Black.

Having grown up in a rural market town in the North East of England, the move to University brought on a subsequent move to France, and from there circumstances took me to Australia, where those ‘two months to see if I like it’ just prior to the Olympic Games in 2000 were the catalyst for permanent residency. I am now approaching 45 years of age, with two smashing kids and a wife who is addicted to triathlons. No slouch on the football field, and a veteran of five Sydney marathons, I now get more out of the game as a coach, manager and referee. Managing a busy IT consultancy, having a wife who is consistently training for the next big race and having two kids with busy school lives does not lend itself to a life of deep thought and pondering for hours over text. It does though give fuel for some observational writing, and makes the time I get to sit and write even more special.

How anyone can write 96,210 words that keep you intrigued, interested and entertained the whole way through is beyond me, but Texi Smith has managed to do just that in what is, I hope, just the first novel ‘Introducing Jarrod Black’ to those of us who enjoy bloody good writing!

You don’t need to have the same passion for football that the author has to enjoy this book. The characters will create that passion for you and pull you along on their highs, lows, and everything in between.

Do yourself a favour and try something new!

Firstly, I must state that I do know the author of this book, who encouraged me to give "Introducing Jarrod Black" a read while standing on the sidelines one weekend, so I did indeed download his baby. However it was some months later, while I was away travelling, that I took the opportunity to jump in and read it, and was I glad I did. I found the book a thoroughly enjoyable read and was soon immersed in the life of Jarrod, both present and past, so much so that it almost felt like a biography. (In fact I wonder if there is some auto-biographical content woven in amongst the fiction as well!) Well done Texi and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

This was an enjoyable read, although I do have an amateur football background. If soccer is not your thing however, you may still enjoy the character development and clever use of local UK knowledge. The author’s use of language & grammer is relaxing, and the story flows well. Interesting the way chapters jump back & forth from the “present” to the main character’s past, which converge towards the story’s conclusion. Jarrod Black seems a likeable sort of protagonist, who seems to possess all the “nice” qualities of a local lad made good. We all know a Jarrod Black, and sort of hope everything works out in the end for him. This rising star author is definately kicking goals.

A great fun read! Read it while travelling for work, but would recommend as a holiday read as it is fast paced and hard to put down. A deep thinker it is not, but a great piece of escapism (I think I even managed to fall in love with Jarrod's wife from the brief descriptions!)

Think Goal! (the movie) meets your favourite dual timeframe read! Clearly written by someone who has a passion for and deep understanding for the game (even if their biased Northern Roots are unashamedly on show!).

Looking forward to seeing where Jarrod and Texi Smith's careers take them!

A totally inspiring, heart-warming book. I cannot recall reading a more entertaining, more inspiring, descriptive book than Texi Smith’s “Introducing Jarrod Black”.

The author’s ability to captivate the reader with his deep knowledge of The World Game throughout the whole book is quite remarkable. The way the author takes us through Jarrod’s journey, going backwards and forwards through the chapters between the mature and experienced Jarrod Black and his childhood/teenage years is clearly a masterstroke.

The level of detail used to describe each of the characters and each of Jarrod’s most influential events in his life gives the feeling of being in a movie about a REAL life friend. I could not help but love each of the characters in the book: Aneka is a cute, adorable, smart little girl who loves her biggest hero, her dad. Sebastian is everyone’s boy inside us and Marianne, well, she’s the soulmate behind a great man. Jarrod’s dad is everyone’s ultimate fan. A rock in times when a son needs guidance and encouragement and also a warm, caring figure when a son needs love.

Having played football at a reasonable high-level in my youth, I can relate to Jarrod’s ups – the thrills of making it through the trials and winning and scoring in Grand Finals. And the downs – getting injured and being drop to the bench while recovering, self-doubt when things are not going your way and the horrible feeling you’re on your way out of a club!

I absolutely loved reading “Introducing Jarrod Black” to the point that I could not put it down. I smiled and laughed throughout each chapter and succumbed to tears when I reached the end of the book. Maybe because the book ends in a perfect way: Jarrod loving football once again, having his dad watching him play for his new club and having tears in his eyes, knowing that his son has started a new chapter of his life and is loving every bit of it. Perhaps, because I didn’t want it to end. At least not before Jarrod made it to his dad’s beloved Newcastle United – maybe we’ll have to wait for the follow-up book for that one!

A fantastic book for all football lovers, or lovers of LIFE. As Jarrod says: Life is GOOD.

A must read. I rate this book 10 stars out of 5. If that’s mathematically possible. I CANNOT wait for the sequel!

This is a superbly constructed book which captures the highs and lows of the beautiful game in a thrilling format.

The author has clearly played the game to a high level to give him the insight to construct a book with such believable twists and turns.

I am happy to fully endorse this book.

The author's passion for the sport is evident from early in the book. He demonstrates an impressive knowledge of the game and the inner workings of a professional football club throughout. The characters are well developed and believable, and the use of parallel story lines following the young Jarrod and the seasoned veteran is extremely well done. It's easy to become truly immersed in both of Jarrod Black's worlds.

Introducing Jarrod Black is a thoroughly enjoyable and easy read - a page turner and definite recommendation for any football fan. Just hoping for another few seasons out of Jarrod Black!
