San Diego

In his debut story, Texas author Nicholas Lopez writes about a psychedelic journey through a blues club in San Diego with commentary on the topics of marriage, friendship, gift-giving, sincerity and artwork. A departure from tradition, Lopez's style is heavily informed by Judeo-Christianity and modern counter-cultures, refusing to present these groups or their ideas as mutually exclusive.

About Nicholas Lopez

Nicholas Lopez is a Texas writer born in 1991 to the son of a Cuban immigrant. Lopez draws on themes present in the seminal works of Raymond Carver and Jacques Lacan related to language and his works seek to explore the disconnect between the signifier and signified components of language. Fascinated with eastern philosophies, religion and economic systems from a young age, Lopez's work often rejects normative western culture and attempts to explain the limitations of our response to the "uncanny" or "the other" through powerfully honest and human storytelling. Works like "San Diego" and "Ground Score" delineate the importance of compassion and empathy and seek to deconstruct moral dichotomies within this context.
