When the superpowers decided they couldn't blow each other off the face of the Earth, other plans had to be created. About Rick Karlsruher

I have led an usual life. Shortly after graduating from college I decided to be a writer. After several years of trying I thought I was on my way only to find it would lead to a Homeric odyssey.

The impact of those two years took me away from writing for more than twenty years. After much cajoling, I succumbed to literally hundreds of requests to write my story that became A Story Almost Told.

Doing so has led me back to this passion.

Now comes Standoff, How the Cold War Really Ended. If you thought you knew, you were wrong. A simple detective story morphs into a spectacular satire on power and arrogance.

Paying homage to Jonathan Swift, Dr, Strangelove, Rowan & Martin and Jon Stewart, Standoff will inform you and create laughter.

I am a graduate of Wake Forest University.

This story has a really twisted plot and a good bit of humour. I was able to follow most of it, but there were several historical references that I didn't understand. There was a good balance between action and plenty of funny surprises, although there was quite a bit of long dialog with characters talking through many plot points.

I read a lot, but almost exclusively science. I occasionally read travel, particularly journals that recount careful observation. I almost never read humor or fiction. Life is full, and days are short.

So I didn't rush to this book when others recommended it. In fact, had they not later asked how I liked it, I might have quite forgotten. The loss would have been mine. It's a good book, and I am happier for having spent the evening with it.

Rick actually sent me an advance copy to read, so I didn't really have to buy it, but want to support him. After reading his first book, I knew this would be a must have! I love his sense of humor, adventure, & imagination. Always entertaining.

I read Rick's previous offering "A Story Almost Told" and really enjoyed the hilarious happenstance stories that the author experienced. But a story is only as good as the person telling the story. Thankfully, Rick knows how to tell a story. I haven't yet finished "Standoff" yet but the author's penchant for story telling is on full display again. It's a page turner and time flies by when you're reading it.

I agree with Debbiea99. I like that the women in the book are leaders and capable. Lauren and Lucy were also young which was cool. They were very, very funny. Every time I didn’t think I could laugh harder I was proven wrong. What a great read!

I love this book. In Cameroon we love seeing the little guys rake in the money while the big guys are preoccupied with other things. I'm going to get a bunch of them as gifts.
