Standoff, How The Cold War Really Ended

Rated 4.96/5 based on 23 reviews
What if everything you thought you knew about how the Cold War ended was wrong? Forget about Reagan, Gorbachev and the Pope. When the superpowers decided they couldn't blow each other off the face of the Earth, other plans had to be created. Think of Dr. Strangelove meets Barney Fife meets Angie Tribeca while wagging the dog. Standoff is the participants' story...and they are sticking to it! More

About Rick Karlsruher

I have led an usual life. Shortly after graduating from college I decided to be a writer. After several years of trying I thought I was on my way only to find it would lead to a Homeric odyssey.

The impact of those two years took me away from writing for more than twenty years. After much cajoling, I succumbed to literally hundreds of requests to write my story that became A Story Almost Told.

Doing so has led me back to this passion.

Now comes Standoff, How the Cold War Really Ended. If you thought you knew, you were wrong. A simple detective story morphs into a spectacular satire on power and arrogance.

Paying homage to Jonathan Swift, Dr, Strangelove, Rowan & Martin and Jon Stewart, Standoff will inform you and create laughter.

I am a graduate of Wake Forest University.

This story has a really twisted plot and a good bit of humour. I was able to follow most of it, but there were several historical references that I didn't understand. There was a good balance between action and plenty of funny surprises, although there was quite a bit of long dialog with characters talking through many plot points.

I read a lot, but almost exclusively science. I occasionally read travel, particularly journals that recount careful observation. I almost never read humor or fiction. Life is full, and days are short.

So I didn't rush to this book when others recommended it. In fact, had they not later asked how I liked it, I might have quite forgotten. The loss would have been mine. It's a good book, and I am happier for having spent the evening with it.

Rick actually sent me an advance copy to read, so I didn't really have to buy it, but want to support him. After reading his first book, I knew this would be a must have! I love his sense of humor, adventure, & imagination. Always entertaining.

I read Rick's previous offering "A Story Almost Told" and really enjoyed the hilarious happenstance stories that the author experienced. But a story is only as good as the person telling the story. Thankfully, Rick knows how to tell a story. I haven't yet finished "Standoff" yet but the author's penchant for story telling is on full display again. It's a page turner and time flies by when you're reading it.

I agree with Debbiea99. I like that the women in the book are leaders and capable. Lauren and Lucy were also young which was cool. They were very, very funny. Every time I didn’t think I could laugh harder I was proven wrong. What a great read!

I love this book. In Cameroon we love seeing the little guys rake in the money while the big guys are preoccupied with other things. I'm going to get a bunch of them as gifts.

After reading Standoff, I started wondering if the Pink Panther movies were actually documentaries. I’m thinking about buying Mr. Karlsruher’s other book after reading this.

I thought I'd read a few pages last night, but ended up reading the whole book in one sitting. I loved the way the author kept the tension up of what Mark was finding out but didn't tell us. Boy when he did, it was hilarious! I'm going to have to read Standoff again, because I'm sure I'm missed some when I was laughing non-stop. This is a great book!

A mate sent me this book. Boy, do I owe him a favor. I couldn’t stop laughing. I love it when the little guy beats a bully at his own game.

I loved how Lauren used her brains to make the grubby guys think she used her body to get what she wanted. Lauren made them look silly and was really funny. The story was so outrageous and hilarious that it made me think. Great job!

After the first 20 pages, I got called away and found myself having to steal away time to get back the book. Finally - enjoyed the writing from my asking ... "is this Prince guy for real?" to a fast finish! I liked this so much that I am buying copies as gifts for some of my colleagues!

I read Mr. Karlsruher's other novel and was anxiously awaiting Standoff. It was worth the wait!

Having worked at the NSA decades ago, Standoff makes as much sense as what some real spies did.

I felt like Petey, the Pit Boss, I laughed so hard, so many times that I thought I might have a heart attack.

Enlightening and hilarious! Here in the UK, we have been taught the old Reagan/Gorby story, but Standoff makes more sense. I loved how the author combined a bit of a detective story with a Jonathan Swift-esque satire. It kept me on the edge of my seat and laughing. I agree with the other reviewer. Standoff would make a great movie!

I couldn’t stop laughing and we Brits aren’t supposed to show that much emotion, but I’m not embarrassed at all. I’ll be telling my mates to pick up copies. I can’t wait to see Mr. Karlsruher’s take on other events. I’m sure it will be more fun than the schoolbooks and newspapers.

What a great read! Espionage, sex, intrigue, a great plot & outstanding characters. Rick did a grand job of pulling together an amazing story that is hard to put down. This could be the next great movie on the big screen. Fabulous!!

full disclosure: i drew the cover.
OK I'm a little biased because of that, maybe. Except, not really.
Reading this book, I related to it on so many levels. All the excitement in times and places and the global affairs I happened to live through.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way Mr. Karlsruher put this work together. There were many moments where I could not wipe the laughing smile from my face even if I'd tried.
Even if you have no interest in how the world was in the 80's, this book is a great read that reveals a unique version of so many topics, about a time when the world really did change.
And the characters ... they're just so well described and animated. Even Claude, that forever player, is especially memorable.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a hilarious tale of some well told world affairs stories.
