Thank you for joining me.
I was born Lindy Rorke in a small town called Gatooma renamed Kadoma. Situated the middle of Rhodesia now called Zimbabwe. I was the third daughter of Trevor and Dawn Rorke. We lived on a ranch 17 miles east of Gatooma. Our ranch was pretty isolated for many years after our story begins which is the year 1952, when my parents met, married and began their life together. I grew up with my siblings and began school at the tender age of five as a boarder at the local school called Sir John Kennedy. I completed my schooling at Jameson High School.I grew up in the war years and as a teenager the war had intensified and touched our lives in so many ways. The loss and maiming of family and friends, political turmoil, sanctions, our own fear of an attack and the suspicion of the farm workers.
I met and married my Husband in Kadoma. We left Zimbabwe for greener pastures in 1983 and have lived in South Africa ever since. We have three children all born in Middelburg, South Africa.
I have written the memoir in the third person as I felt it was not my story to claim. The book began quite unintentionally, I was spending a lot of time alone as my husband spends months at a time working up in Africa. I got tired of spending my time gym-ing, socializing and playing bridge. I began my parents story for the grandchildren, I wanted them to know what an amazing man their grandfather was. The story was told to me by my mother and of course my own memories, as it grew and my friends read my writings and were interested, so I wrote more with their encouragement.
As 'they' say...'the rest is history'
