Aside from the aliens, this is a rather grim but realistic view of a possible future for America. I've often wondered what it might look like if America fell completely apart, and the author did a great job connecting up the dots.

Also, there was a significant part of the story that surprised me at the end, and I'm actually glad for the twist or else I might have spent the rest of the evening depressed. I don't want to spoil it, but it has to do with the title.

It's a compelling story that's worth reading. I enjoyed it a lot. The only thing I can think of that would have made it better is if there was a follow-up scene to see what the hero's life was like after he put the five little caskets into the ground.
