I always love to see historical fiction pieces that try to portray a genuinely alien aspect of history. Dueling culture is very strange to most of us today, and it's interesting to see it explored.

I liked the detail of the protagonist retroactively calling the war the War Between the States, which is what people in the South probably would have called the Civil War in the 1920's.

It is also true that one of the strange reasons for the popularity of dueling culture was the simple fact that a lot of people in the past were starved for entertainment.

I certainly appreciate the anti-violence and anti-war message in the story, as well as the criticism of the idea of dueling over a woman.

This story should have been edited more, but that's only a minor criticism.

This brief tale is well told, but I am confused about the line: "I executed a quick rip roast." Unless the author means that his hero killed a fast-moving slice of cooked meat, it should probably be changed to say "riposte."
