English translation of Aelian's "Various History" with updates and accompanying Greek text. More
Aelian's "Various History" is a curious work written in the early 3rd century C.E. by a Roman stoic writing in Greek. It's an amalgamation of short vignettes of topics ranging from biography, to philosophy, to natural history, and to outright gossip. In some ways it was both the Reader's Digest and People magazine of its time, providing a fascinating glimpse into the details of life in the classical world.
This edition contains the long out-of-print 1665 translation by Thomas Stanley, a revised and updated version of Stanley's translation for contemporary readers, and a version of the Greek text corresponding to these English versions for students of classical Greek. All of these are provided together in one low-cost convenient ebook.
