The heroine emerges from the rubble of UCLA after a cataclysmic event and is crossing the country to get back to her family in Maine. She is larger than life with serious fighting skills that she needs as she encounters people who attack strangers. There is a major villain who secretly controls enclaves, vampires and a very confusing romantic relationship. This is the first in a series so not much is resolved at the end. Lots of action.
