A very charming and fun little story. I first read it in his collection, the rest of which is every bit as good and better. Lovely.

If you already know and love Bruce Coville's work, this is as good as you expect it to be. If you don't know his work, you are in for a wonderful surprise, and I'm not going to spoil it for you, but welcome to the growing crowd of his fans. Bruce writes (usually) about a world that is very much like ours, except there is magic and even the villains are much nicer than in our world.

If you already know Bruce's work and don't like it, then you are incorrigibly grumpy and probably need to read more of it to cheer you up.

I'm an adult, and I enjoy reading Bruce Coville almost as much as my daughter does. I come away from it smiling and with a heightened belief in the basic goodness of humanity. I also come away from it withing I could write that well.
