I read 13% before putting this down. Interesting start, but the main character has few redeeming qualities, with no people skills. After we learn how the afterlife is set up, the plot moves forward by Daniels repeated fumbling of interpersonal interactions.

I bought this novel on a whim and I am so glad that I did. It was an adventure story the like I have not read in a very long time - truly gripping throughout and filled with wonderful characters, The 9th Fortress is the work of a truly extraordinary imagination. I was left absolutely stunned at the conclusion, and thoroughly entertained. Again, wow!

Each summer I look for a book that can drag me out of reality and into another world. I’m only on chapter six but this book is doing that for me. I can forget all about my work and let myself slide into this adventure story, where the characters face terrible and sometimes gruesome challenges and decisions. The stoic character of the samurai warrior is the kind of person you want to follow, just to see what he will do next. I’m looking forward to seeing where the adventure takes me.
