The book continues the story from the first volume of the saga in an unexpected way. The first book ended in a triumphant defeat of the Triad’s invasion, only to be followed by bleak and testing times for the free people of Iridia in this one.

The second book’s story resumes with the impasse that was reached at the end of the first one. Open conflict gives way to intrigue akin to a fantasy world’s equivalent of cold war. The two sides trade covert blows in a tit-for-tat game that is not prominent enough to enable either side to gain a clear upper hand. It also shows the first chinks in the alliances that had been formed between the two groups of wizards of light. This results in a narrative that is more captivating and far more suspenseful than the previous volume had been.

Like in the first volume, the world building shines again. This time it takes the form of an island sanctuary Elixia together with a greatly expanded repertoire of locations and creatures that inhabit the continent of Iridia. As is the case with the previous book, they feel hard done by a linguistic description and cry out for a visual presentation.
