About Emily Fink

Like many schools, lunch was a welcome break in between classes. At Dodge, students from every grade made their way to the elementary gym.

The food the school cooks made for us actually tasted good. I think we were lucky in that regard. We had homemade breads, cookies and cakes. We had homemade chili, chicken noodle soup and spaghetti sauce. And the peanut butter bars — everyone seems to remember those.

We thought those recipes were kept in the old cafeteria storage closet, in a box, collecting dust and asked a longtime school employee to look for such box. Well, she found it! Recipes in the front of the box were obviously the most used, with handwritten notes, dried flour and oil stains.

The yield was edited from 200 down to about a dozen, so you could recreate these sentimental meals and desserts for your family and friends.

In this book, we’ve collected a select few of the favorites. If you remember any of the food fondly, buy some milk powder, shortening, canned soup and ground beef—actually, buy lots of ground beef—and make your favorite recipe.

We hope this cookbook brings back pleasant memories from your school lunchroom like it has for us.
