I was pleasantly surprised by Deanna Chase's Haunted on Bourbon Street. I think I expected something a little more H.P. Mallory-ish...more sexual tension and humour. I don't mean to suggest that there wasn't plenty of both, but rather it isn't the focus of this book. In a sense this is as much a mystery as a paranormal romance. They have to investigate and identify the ghost, find out what he wants, find out how to defeat him, and find out how to get on with life.

I liked Jade. While she came in with some preconceived notions about strip clubs and those that work in them she eventually proved herself to be open minded and mentally flexible. She also had a good strong backbone... though one of these days I swear I am going to do some sort of research project on how often otherwise healthy, well-balanced women in romantic fiction manage to twist ankles while in the presence of sexy men who can carry them away...and maybe even go on to explore how often they then end up in said sexy man's bed. Here we find a woman who apparently can't even turn 90° the right without injuring herself. Sheesh!

Dodgy balance aside, I really did like Jade. It was also nice that her empathic ability was integral to her personality, but not to saving the day. Well it was, but you know how sometimes in books the main character will have one strong skill and somehow it is the only thing that is needed to single-handedly save the world? Not so much here and that was refreshing.

I thought Kane was not only super sexy, but a sweet heart to boot. Pyper was a firecracker. I did have a little trouble deciding what an LSU graduate (one presumes she graduated in the absence of information to the contrary) was doing working in a strip club, but I was willing to accept it. Kat, Dan, and Ian filled their roles, but I felt little for them.

The twist wasn't all that difficult to guess, but it also wasn't so obvious that one felt there wasn't a need to finish the story. I did think things got a little convoluted there at the end. Yes, I suppose I could call it action packed, but the whole feel of the novel changed with the increased pace. Plus, it all felt a little convent. I know a week was supposed to have passed, so obviously the group worked hard to pull it together. But since the reader isn't party to any of this it felt wrong. Does that make sense?

I'm glad to have given it a read at long last and would be more than willing to read the continuation of the series.

I am an avid paranormal reader and find myself very picky with how authors write. If you like Karen Marie Moning and JR Ward, then you will LOVE this authors style of writing. She is creative and beautifully respectful during the steamy parts of her books characters and makes you feel as though you are a part of the book - just like an author should be. One of my new finds and a much loved author who is now added to my collection of cherished stories.

If you like romance then this novel is for you. I am a sucker for these types of books because you can put them down and come back with out losing the story. The story is a good one and the steamy romance scenes are worth a look but this like a lot of others makes me want to strangle the female leads. All in all a pleasant enough way to spend the day in the sun.

Needless to say I enjoyed the story. The beginning was a little tough to get through and seemed to lack direction but once Ms. Chase hit her stride in about chapter five the story took off. There were still some parts that I found a little too thought out and wordy but that's probably more me than the author. I like the tale to be a constant down roller coaster! Although the parts that had me on the edge of my seat were exciting and made up for the slower parts that allowed me to relax. My husband got a kick out of it since I would be fidgety when it was a down point and motionless at the intense ones!

The characters however flitted between someone you'd like to be friends with, to someone you'd probably avoid at a party. The depth of the characters was surface only, even with Jade there was only so much you got to know about her and the connections around her - all surface. The relationship with her aunt was an unnecessary side story that could have been mentioned and developed in another story. The other side relationships with some of the secondary characters were also a little over done and not needed for this particular story. A stronger focus on the immediate ties, particularly with her best friend and ex-boyfriend, would have made for a stronger story.

A good story with an interesting plot and a definite read for a couple of genres! A paranormal romance hits a few different markets, which is difficult to achieve, but I believe Ms. Chase did just that. I look forward to reading more works from this author, and more Jade Calhoun novels too!

Haunted on Bourbon Street is a supernatural romance, not hard core erotica, so if you are looking for lots of meaningless sex, you won't find it here.

Instead, Deanna Chase has skillfully woven a tale that hits all the right notes & features a well rounded cast of characters.

Being rejected hurts & it's perfectly natural to subsribe to the adage, "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", so when Jade starts dreaming about her new landlord, Kane, she isn't ready to jump in the sack with him, no matter how hot the dreams are. Not to mention that he's probably a player, after all he does own a strip club.

Since her best friend, Kat, is now dating the jerk who hurt her, she's also not ready to become bosom buddies with her boss at the coffee shop, Pyper, who also happens to be a business partner of her sexy new landlord & dances part time in the strip club.

As if she didn't have enough upheaval in her life, on her first night in her new apartment, a ghost shows up in the bathroom & freaks her out. Now there are ghost hunters roaming around the building taking readings, her ex has caused a scene in the strip club & the lady who owns the herbal shop down the street keeps asking her to join her for lunch. Could things get any weirder?

I truely enjoyed this book & am anxiously awaiting the next story in the series.
