The Water Balloon Gang

Rated 5.00/5 based on 5 reviews
A liquor store robbery (even if it was accidental) wasn’t mentioned on the list of potential activities when a twelve-year-old John Redstand became the youngest member of The Water Balloon Gang that hot summer’s morning. “I don’t know if they’ve gotta warrant, but they got guns and dogs!” One of the funniest short stories you will ever read. Cute little story that does give the laugh it said it would. The more obvious things in this book aren’t as obvious to Johnny and that’s what I think makes the book so good. He even words things more delicately than the sentences deserve to be worded. The book is definitely short but sweet. I'm sure my nephews would get a kick out of it.

It was super cute and a good laugh; there’s not really much more you can ask from a short story. It read quite a bit like The Sandlot, minus the baseball angle. As The Sandlot is accepted as a cult classic in my household, this is high praise.

This story really captures that exciting feeling that we all remember when you had that chance to play with the big kids. We see the older characters do one stupid thing after another, meanwhile our main character can't help but feel impressed by them. He spends his time with them confused by what they are doing and how they react to everything. A memory that everyone will relate to with lots of giggles in there too. What started off as a seemingly innocent day has turned into quite the adventure for our main character. He learns some lessons and gets a thrill from his adventure with the big boys.

This is one of the funniest short stories I’ve read in a long time. From the moment I started reading the first chapter, I couldn’t put it down. What’s better than a group of kids getting into trouble on a hot Summer’s day? The author has a brilliant voice: I love the way the main character describes every event and every scene. There’s a lot of heart in this story, too. Who doesn’t remember being twelve years old and wanting to hang out with the older kids? One of my favorite parts, is the scene involving the dogs (no spoilers here; you have to read it for yourself!). I really enjoyed reading this and I have to recommend it.

This book pulled me in right away. Even though I grew up in a different part of the country than the characters I had a lot of similarities with the characters. I felt as though I was reliving my childhood and could Identify my friends. It brought me back 30-40 years and helped me remember some fun stories. At the same time it made me laugh.
