As the austerity measures set by the IMF begin to take effect, life for the average citizen in Ireland, and indeed the western world as a whole, becomes more and more unbearable. There is a growing consensus that soon the masses will not stand for it anymore and will soon resort to unprecedented level of civil disobedience. Upon realizing this, the elite of the world come together to invest in the creation of new chip called the “serf-gene” that once placed in the brain can transform the person into a serf who is happy in their place and position in spite of the fact that their quality of life is shrinking right before their very eyes. The chip is not properly tested, however, and the suppliers soon learn that it affects each person uniquely, though they do not know why. Lionel Flagherty is the first Irishman to be implanted and has been placed into a job with no memory of his previous life. They realize after watching him for several months that he is beginning to lose his mind, as is happening, unfortunately, to many people who have been implanted. The chip is symptomatic of the impossibility of discovering true happiness and freedom in the dystopian world that the oligarchs of the West have been allowed to create. A group of intellectuals in Ireland decide to orchestrate a revolution in order to awaken the masses to the serfdom into which they have been unwittingly sold. This is the story of how the lives of Irish citizens are affected, from the very rich to the very poor, and how they each struggle to survive in the changing landscape of modern society.
