I just adored this story. I didn't read the first in this series and the appearance of Joe. This book did reveal the happenings though so I wasn't confused. This book is a keeper and a book that will be re-read. (Yes, I have to go back and start at the beginning! Not that it is necessary though.) I loved the fact that you basically received two stories in this book. With POVs from all four characters, it was really like watching a movie play out. I just love all of Ms. Shay's work. She has done such in depth research for her firefighter books that it really feels like you are a part of the action. It just isn't about the romance.

It was nice to see a romance about two "older" people as well. Not too many authors have touched on this subject. Just because we are middle aged doesn't mean that we can't have romance left in our lives!!

This was actually pretty sweet deal. You get two romances in one book. Chase and Vanessa, the Fire Chief and Mayor; then Joe and Holly, the Fire Lt. and the Mayor's daughter.

There are so many storylines going on in this book, it should really be confusing. The book is so well written and Kathryn Shay has communicated with such clarity that it is easy to follow each path, even when they intersect.

I liked Chase and the granddaughters, who happened to live with him. I really didn't like Vanessa at the beginning and was surprised when she grew on me. Joe and Holly took turns with me liking and disliking each of them. At times, he wasn't the most adult or likeable person, and Holly had a number of moments of being wishy washy.

There was romance, sexiness, action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, and secrets. A lot crushed into this book to make it enjoyable. I didn't put it down until I was done, so I ended up reading into the wee hours of the morning with no regrets.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
