The High Sierra gave her everything she wanted–the trees and creatures around her remote mountain Outpost, hikers and backpackers who visited her for directions or permits, who repeatedly told her she was so lucky to be stationed in the most beautiful place on earth. They were right, she thought, she had it all–that is until a handsome stranger stumbled into her life and turned it upside down… More

Discovering a new author with this much talent is a great pleasure.

Margeret D’Angelo said, “Writers construct facades and faces with words. When the words are right, the reader will see the whole movie, and not remember they read it in a book.”

I start with this quote because it has to do with the best part of Sandi Levy’s writing. She is meticulous, concise, and very good at giving us the right word from which we construct the whole scene. This is especially important given that certain genres, romance being at the top of the list, can give us too many formulaic compositions. The secret to finding a great romance novel is to find one where the author is not just putting words on paper but putting pictures in your mind.

To help illustrate this let me give you a few lines from the book that show how well Sandi Levy did in her first book, Altitude. Here is one of my favorite moments in the book.

She grinned up at him from the floor. Tiny plants stretched toward the sunlight above the greenhouse windows.

"Look, Mike, a flower. It's a tomato in disguise."
Not only does the book contain many of these small writing jewels, but the plot is moved along well by the dialogue and descriptions. Beginning writers often try to force a dialogue, which in turn makes it seem like filler instead of substance.

A well-written novel will move the characters through a combination of actions and dialogue. It is the action that helps us to understand the conditions surrounding the characters. Sandi Levy has done an exceptional job of giving us those descriptions that help us to understand both the characters and the things that happen to them.

Altitude is a romance novel, but it is also an adventure. It is the risk, the turmoil, and the potential for great harm that helps move the novel along. We are given a good split between character building dialogue and the effective descriptions; so much so that the book will keep you interested from start to finish.

If you like romance, and especially romance which involves a bit of action, then you will like Altitude by Sandi Levy. I enjoyed this book so much that I have already reached out to the author in anticipation of the new book. I think we have the discovery a new talent here, and I hope you will enjoy the book as much as I did.
