The Rocks Preparatory School for Boys lived in its own world. 140 odd boys and 16 teaching staff inhabited the school, mostly isolated from the outside world not just by the boundaries but also by the society they formed for themselves. Like all communities, most conformed, but some did not.

A story of friendship and loss at a 1960s boarding school. More

I was linked this by a friend and I must say it was is a beautiful if painful story of first love and loss. The atmosphere of the 1960s prep (junior private school from 8-13 in UK) was excellent as was the evocation of the Cornish countryside. The character of the boys shines through and it reminded me very much of my schooldays in a similar environment during the 1980s. It is a very good first novel and I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

I really enjoyed and was moved by this story. Pip's naivity, or self-denial about his sexuality and how other people knew about him was believable and touching. I found the last chapter, about loss of someone he'd thought reciprocated his feelings, and the grim reality that he was without a close friend and confidante, quite harrowing, even if it was realistic. A second appeal of this story was it's setting in a real place, even if the school was fictional, and the chance to find real places, like Mousehole on Google Earth.
