STINKY WINKY SILLY WILLY OFF-KEY DONKEY! This somewhat off-putting title warns the reader that they're in for a funky trip with Willy a whacky character who just so happens to be a donkey.
Willy the donkey lives on a farm and being there doesn't hinder him from having some good times. He does find ways to get himself into a some pretty sticky and stinky situations. With a curiosity of a child he has the qualities and innocence of a babe. Pure joy is what he's all about.
Willy's story is one of being different but in a good way, quirky but not scary, and how to get the most out of life but for only just a moment. There's something to be said for "alone time." This is a sweet little story if you can get pass and not dwell on the "stink" part of the book and the reference to it in the title. There is a life lesson for the young reader here, being different should be embraced and not let your fears of being adventurous get the best of you. You can be different, and that's ok. Sometimes we need a little Willy inside of us to push the envelope just a little further than we want it to go. This is one donkey that knows how to enjoy life.
I appreciated Mr. Jacobsen's simplicity and although this book is geared towards ages two to six years, I'm not sure that a two year old will get the deeper meaning of this book. I do wish that there were more happier illustrations for the youngest of picture readers. Overall a sweet little gem with a powerful message. Looking forward to the next book. Life lessons came in the form of a four-legged quirky animal.
