A fabulous read from the start, really hard to put down once you've started. I loved the characters, especially James, he has stayed with me, and I want to know where he going to next and what will happen to him. Will he ever get back to Gloucestershire and the love of his life? Great pace throughout with never a dull moment. Interesting historical detail. Can't wait for the sequel Mair!

This was a book I had to keep reading - I found Mr Mace and the other characters very believable. I was particularly interested in the accounts of life in Jamaica and the people he met there, and enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot. At the end I was left wondering what happens to James next, and I do hope the author is considering a sequel!

Very enjoyable book - the characters are interesting and sometimes unpredictable which makes them believable. I wanted to keep reading to follow their fates. I found the exotic setting fascinating and gained an insight into another life which I knew little about. Events take a surprising turn more than once during the story which was exciting and refreshing. I’d like a follow up to find out what happens to James next!

I felt the 1st chapter or prologue was somewhat uninteresting with unclear characterization.
I enjoyed the following chapters, especially the descriptive passages- they transported me to the location. On the whole a good read.

I was hooked on this story from the first sentence and lost several hours sleep because I couldn't put it down. It would make a brilliant TV serial.

This is a cracking read and a real page-turner. James Mace, the main character in this story had me hooked within thirty minutes and I guarantee he will do the same to you. I highly recommend you read this story you will not be disappointed. If anything it will leave you hungry for more. It has all the makings of a new Poldark. It would be perfect production for the BBC.
