About Dawn Babcock

Hi, my name is Dawn Babcock and I am the owner of the House of Essex, the first store to sell exclusively makeup, makeup brushes and makeup accessories in Junction City, Kansas. I am also the author of House of Essex GRWM (Get Ready With Me) - A Fun Organized And (Most Importantly) It Really Works 10 Step Makeup Application System & Guide which showcases our proprietary 10 Step Makeup Application System™. We also will be releasing our 2nd book, House of Essex The Encyclopedia of Makeup Brushes - The Art Of Beauty At Your Fingertips, coming out the beginning of 2019.

My love affair with makeup goes back many years, to when I was a little girl and ordered my first makeup kit out of the back of a magazine (for a penny, yes, a penny). I was around eight or so. When that kit came in, I was instantly hooked.

Now let’s fast forward a couple of years. I have always turned to makeup to cheer me up or to help me celebrate, it doesn’t matter what the occasion is, I have always included it. And so, it was for me several years ago. I was upset over a tragic event in my life, and I turned to makeup (as I always do) for comfort.

After a couple of months, my grief turned to curiosity and that curiosity eventually turned into action. One thing lead to another and I began this journey. It started slow, starting out of my house, scrimping and saving to buy products one piece at a time, but it has since evolved into something magical.

And the magic is this. When the storefront opened six months later in 2017, almost every person who walked through my doors would ask me the same questions. What brush did they need for (fill in the blank), how to apply a certain part of their makeup or even how to do the whole makeup process. And honestly, sometimes I didn’t know. And so I put two and two together and realized that we were all kind of in the same boat and what we needed was a manual to help us answer all of these questions and more. So, this is how this book came to be, it’s a labor of love for all of us. For those of us that have ever struggled to feel confident and capable in themselves when they sit down to do their makeup.
